Our Story
Our founder Dr Leyla Hussein OBE is a psychotherapist specialising in supporting sexual abuse survivors, including women and girls who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). Leyla also runs support groups and counselling sessions for activists working to end sexual violence. Through this work and her own experiences as a leading human rights activist, Leyla began to develop much needed resources and specialist support for other activists.
@WeArePurposeful
The activists working to end FGM face extreme challenges dealing with traumatised girls and women, as well as often facing hostility and even threats to their lives from those who oppose their work. They are dedicated to their work and balancing the demands placed on them with their own wellbeing is difficult. We are not all human rights activists but at times we also face challenges and our work can cause stress, anxiety, and other health issues. Recognising this, in 2018 Leyla founded Magool to offer bespoke consultancy and training on wellbeing in the workplace to organisations who want to support their teams.
While reaching out to more people with our wellbeing training, supporting women and girls remains at the heart of our work. That’s why we have set up Magool to support organisations that share these values, and a portion of the profits from our consultancy and trainings will be used to fund support to activists working to end violence against women and girls and/or support those who have experienced it. We will fund projects such as the Dahlia Project counselling service for survivors of FGM as well as directly supporting grassroots activists in Africa. It is these activists, who are often survivors themselves, who are on the frontline protecting some of the most vulnerable women and girls in the world, and Magool stands with them.
At Magool we believe that wellbeing should be at the heart of the people strategy for all organisations. We do our best work when we are healthy and feel supported. This does not happen automatically and requires organisations to act, so Magool offers resources and training for practical, low cost ways to make wellbeing part of everyday life in the workplace.
